Michal Chelbin (b. 1974) is an Israeli photographer known for her portraits of people outside the mainstream of society. Characterized by lush, saturated colors and the artist’s signature attentiveness to the absurd detail, much of Chelbin’s photography depicts young performers and wrestlers, usually in childhood or early adolescence, and illuminates the vulnerability inherent to youth and to athletic performance. Her most recent series, Sailboats and Swans, was shot in prisons in Ukraine and Russia; the artist photographed convicted criminals in intimate, sometimes homely situations, generating a direct tension between private and public perception of the subjects. Chelbin’s work has been exhibited at the Andrea Meislin Gallery, New York, NY; M+B Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel; and the National Portrait Gallery, London, UK, among many others. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
