Lot Details

Taking two intertwined rubber inner tubes, Michael Sailstorfer exemplifies his love of employing found objects and manipulating them as minimally as possible to allow the piece’s inherent aesthetic to speak for itself. The two rubber inner tubes for trucks along with the other individual pieces (including steel cable and clips) will be delivered in a box. An accompanying manual will describe how the tubes will be inflated, assembled, and installed.

Contemporary artist Michael Sailstorfer (b. 1979) works to convey emotion and psychological states through his unique sculptures using inventive materials to convey his artistic transformations. Often employing a sense of absurdity and a comedic tone in his work, Sailstorfer redefines functional objects and materials into mocking works of dysfunctional utilitarianism. Ranging from helicopters and bus stops, to natural landscapes such as a forest floor, the artist regards the formal qualities of his materials as poetic unto themselves, without being hindered by extraneous explanations. Sailstorfer attended the International Studio Program (Oslo, Norway) and received his MA from Goldsmith College (London, UK). The artist has exhibited at numerous venues including S.M.A.K. (Ghent, Belgium), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN), Tinguely Museum (Basel, Switzerland), and Modern Art (Oxford, UK), among others.
