Lot Details

The size of this installation varies. It is comprised of 12 parts.

The work of Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler most often took the form of highly conceptual, socially engaged projects created for public spaces. As such, with 12 individual parts depicting an abstracted black and white design, “Things do continue to move on the outside” is a rare example of their permanent artwork. In this work, the artists documented the cracks that appeared on facades of buildings.

Kate Ericson (1955-1995) and Mel Ziegler (b. 1956), were a husband and wife duo whose work brought conceptual art into the public realm. Ericson and Ziegler met at the Kansas City Art Institute, where they both obtained their bachelors of fine art in 1978. They began working together in that year, and went on to earn MFA’s from the California Institute of the Arts in 1982. Their work often invited audience participation, engaging the public with political, social, and economic issues. They continued to collaborate until Ericson’s premature death in 1995 from brain cancer. Although they preferred to create non-permanent installations outside of museums and galleries, their work and projects has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, and Costa Mesa, CA; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA, among others.
