East Indian ink on paper, signed and numbered, edition of 14 uniques
25 x 20 cm
"Models", a work from 1994, consists of a hundred portraits on paper, in which Marlene Dumas directly addresses the world of fashion, media, and models. This closed series from the collection of the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, was created for the exhibition "Du concept à l'image" (Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris). The "Models" spell out the image of women to today's "mega models": "It's not the fallen woman nor the temptress I'm after. It's not the babydolls I want nor the Amazons. It's everything mixed together to form a true bastard race." (Marlene Dumas)

Born in 1953 in Cape Town, South African, Marlene Dumas is best known for her unsettling images of women and children. After studying art at the University of Cape Town, Dumas moved to the Netherlands, where she continues to work today. Referencing magazines, pornographic imagery and personal Polaroid photographs of friends and lovers, the artist primarily paints figurative paintings laden with psychological tension. Dumas works with gestural brush strokes and washes, mainly in oil, watercolor and ink. Many of her pieces are small and intimate. Her first major American show took place in June 2008 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Museum of Modern Art, New York City.
