Lot Details

Los Angeles-based artist Mark Flores’s work translates the optically-driven mechanics of the photographic process into delicately produced artworks, fusing abstraction and figuration to examine the malleability of historical authenticity. “Charles Baudelaire” (2004) is a particularly strong example of Flores’ drawings of well known figures or events in which the artist’s subjects are situated against ambient backdrops that both reference and disorient their original context.

Mark Flores was born in Ventura, CA, in 1970 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. In 1999 he received his BFA from UCLA, and In 2002 he received his MFA in CalArts. Flores has had notable solo exhibitions at David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles and Alison Jacques Gallery in London. His work has been included in major group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, IL); the Orange County Museum of Art, (Newport Beach, CA); Patricia Faure Gallery (Santa Monica, CA); California State University (Los Angeles, CA); and Golinko Kodansky Gallery (Los Angeles, CA). Writings on Flores’s work have appeared in Artforum, Flash Art, The Los Angeles Times, Frieze, and The New York Times.
