Lot Details

‘Wrong Way Round the Track’ is a highly important diptych by the acclaimed Welsh born artist Mark Evans. Evans has built an international reputation for his spectacular leather ‘paintings’ in which he uses a knife to literally etch and carve intricate images and compositions directly into the surface of his hand dyed leather. His technical virtuosity is astonishing in his ability to render light and shade and suggest sophisticated tonalities. Unlike painting or sculpture, the technique of etching leaves no room for error – once a line is incised, it can never be removed. The final result is sensual, tactile, and primal – his work breathes. Evans creates pieces that are larger than life both physically and thematically. The detail with which Evans works is an interesting contrast to the commodification of contemporary culture, as well as to pop artists who turn out works as fast as the mass-produced products they aim to comment on. In this sense, Evans creates pieces that both materially and thematically critique the one-dimensional ideals of modern beauty and easy satisfaction.

Evans’ works often comments on the transient versus the permanent. Having grown up in a family where his grandmother had to bury three of her children, Evans was surrounded by death from an early age. As a result, it became crucial for Evans to use his work to say something about himself, about his life, and about the mortality of man. It was at this point that he began to create his burning skull pieces of which ‘Wrong Way Round the Track’ is a powerful example. In it the artist depicts the image of a skull – the traditional symbol of death - dissolving into a trail of flames whilst being overlaid with the etched designs that cover a US Dollar note. In so doing the artist creates a contemporary take on the European tradition of the memento mori and comments on the impermanence of money and worldly pursuits.

Evan’s work has found a dedicated international following which includes Simon Cowell, Manchester United football player Rio Ferdinand and R&B singer Craig David.
