Marina Abramovic (Serbia, 1946) is a winner of the Golden Lion award at the Venice Biennale and referred to as the "grandmother of performance art". She is one of the most famous and one of the most important performance artists in the world, using her body as brush and canvas to create searing, temporal images which are documented with photography. She is currently developing a performing arts center in Hudson, New York, and held a retrospective in 2010 at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
