Often featuring uncomfortably close-up images of androgynous bodies covered in glitter, beads, paint, or pearls, Marilyn Minter’s richly-colored photographs never fail to prompt her viewers to question what truly constitutes beauty and glamour. "Bubble Gum" is no exception to Minter's oeuvre, examining the multifaceted nature of high fashion and revealing it as simultaneously beautiful and grotesque. The viewer is unsure as to whether the model's bright pink pouting lips are stylistically wet or simply covered in beads of sweat; however, this imagery is nevertheless seductive, presenting forms that are at once fetishized and abject.
