Lot Details

Work on paper by Marcel Dzama. Work is in mint condition, though there is some rippling of the paper surrounding the image due to the lightweight paper interacting with the watercolor.

This early, joyful watercolor is a prime example of Dzama's whimsical and highly provocative nature.

Canadian Marcel Dzama (b. 1974) creates small and delicate drawings, hand-tinted with watercolor, ink, even root beer, which have an eccentric aesthetic sensibility. The compositions of cartoon-ish creatures combine references that are at once intellectually highbrow and reminiscent of retro pop-culture from the Roaring 1920s and 1950s. Dzama received his BFA from the University of Manitoba. He was honored at Art Cologne in 2000 with the New Artist Award and received the ARCO Award in Madrid, Spain in 2012. A critical survey of Dzama's work entitled "Marcel Dzama - Aux mille tours" opened at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal in 2010. Dzama's work has also been featured in recent solo shows at Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, Spain (2012); Sies + Höke, Düsseldorf, Germany (2012); Museo de Arte de Zapopan, Zapopan, Mexico (2012); David Zwirner, New York, NY (2011); Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, The Netherlands (2011); and Timothy Taylor Gallery, London, England (2007).
