This 1980 work is acrylic on printed paper titled "Gesture Study #28" by Manuel Neri. Manuel Neri has spent the bulk of his career studying human figuration, with his highly-textured, painterly sculptures focused on gestures and posture. This work on paper is a continuation of the artist's explorations into figural positioning, and a study specific to the head. Artwork measures 12.25 x 9.25 inches.

Manuel Neri (American, b. 1930) was born in Sanger, California and studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, and at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. He taught at the University of California, Davis from 1965 to 1990. Neri is known primarily for his life-size figurative sculptures in plaster, bronze, and marble, as well as for his association with the Bay Area Figurative movement during the 1950s and 1960s. Manuel Neri has received numerous awards including the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, National Endowment for the Arts Grant, San Francisco Arts Commission Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sculpture, Honorary Doctorate for Outstanding Achievement in Sculpture by the San Francisco Art Institute, etc.
