Lot Details

"Ye Ye in Position" (1963) is a gelatin silver print photographs by famed Contemporary African Artist Malick Sidibé. Dimensions: 47.20 x 47.20 (120 x 120 cm), unframed and in excellent condition. Later impression. The wildness of the 1950’s, and the coming of independence in many African countries gave birth to a new generation of photographers who were very involved in the cultural and social life that they recorded. Malick Sidibé was a pivotal character in this – he was present at all the soirees where the young people learned the new dances coming from Europe and Cuba, and dressed elegantly in Western clothes. This on-the-spot coverage provided simple pictures, full of truth and complicity. From his photos an insouciance and spontaneity emerges: he captured the playful partying, full of laughter and life. The Hasselblad Award was presented to Sidibé 2003 and in 2007 he was awarded the Venice Biennale's Golden Lion Award for lifetime achievement- the first time it has ever been presented to a photographer.

This photograph is one of Sidibé’s portraits from “Studio Malick,” his commercial business which was known as a place that cultivated visual freedom. Sidibé has described his approach to taking studio photographs as “controlled but free.” His photographic objective was to capture the life and spirit of a person in a pose of their choice. He also referred to his studio a place of “make believe” where clients would come to essentially play dress-up in front of his camera, whether that meant riding a motor-scooter, appearing in traditional African garb, or wearing Western attire.
