Lot Details

"Soirée les frangins" (1966) is a gelatin silver print photograph by famed Contemporary African Artist Malick Sidibé. Dimensions: 23.62 x 19.68,(60 x 50 cm), unframed and in excellent condition. Printed in 2011.The wildness of the 1950’s, and the coming of independence in many African countires gave birth to a new generation of photographers who were very involved in the cultural and social life that they recorded. Malick Sidibé was a pivotal character in this – he was present at all the soirees where the young people learned the new dances coming from Europe and Cuba, and dressed elegantly in Western clothes. This on-the-spot coverage provided simple pictures, full of truth and complicity. From his photos an insouciance and spontaneity emerges: he captured the playful partying, full of laughter and life. The Hasselblad Award was presented to Sidibé 2003 and in 2007 he was awarded the Venice Biennale's Golden Lion Award for lifetime achievement- the first time it has ever been presented to a photographer.
