Lot Details

"Who Survive? (Floating World Series)" (2009) is a fresh and exciting painting by female Japanese artist Maki Hosokawa. This painting measures approximately 28.67 x 23.85 inches (72.7 x 60.6 cm), is unframed and in excellent condition. Maki Hosokawa is internationally acclaimed for her unique manner in which she conflates local Japanese histories and figures with historic narratives. This work depicts a young geisha in her so-called "floating world", depicted hovering over the earth living in her own world in outer-space. This work's surreal setting underscores Japan's concerns over environmental, political and population threats to the inhabitants of the earth.

Maki Hosokawa was born in Osaka, Japan in 1980 into the generation of Japanese artists raised on manga, anime and the Japanese street-art of the early 1990’s. Maki's works are sought after throughout Asia, especially after she was the winner of the GEISAI #6 Award by Takashi Murakami’s company KaiKai KiKi.
