"Venus and Mars (Botticelli)" (2008) is one of the largest and finest of the figurative paintings by acclaimed Japanese female artist, Maki Hosokawa. Dimensions: 44.10 x 63.78 inches (112 x 162 cm), unframed and in excellent condition.
This painting is Maki's version of the painting "Venus and Mars" (c. 1483) by Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli, depicting the Roman gods Venus and Mars as the allegories of Beauty and Valour. Hosokawa has garnered international fame for her clever historically-based narratives, that combine the Contemporary Japanese 'superflat' style and anime with famous European paintings and art historical narratives.
