Lot Details

"Venus and Mars (Botticelli)" (2008) is one of the largest and finest of the figurative paintings by internationally acclaimed Japanese female artist, Maki Hosokawa. This work measures 44.09 x 63.78 inches (112 x 162 cm) is unframed and in excellent condition. This painting is Maki's version of the painting "Venus and Mars" (c. 1483) by the Italian Renaissance famous artist Sandro Botticelli, depicting the Roman gods Venus and Mars as the allegories of Beauty and Valour. In the original, as here, Venus watches Mars sleep while two infant satyrs play carrying his armour as another rests under his arm. A fourth blows a small conch shell in his ear in an effort to wake him, a detail she also includes in this fantastical work. Maki has garnered international acclaim for these clever historically-based narratives, that combine Contemporary Japanese 'superflat' painting styles and anime with famous European paintings and art historical references.
