Lot Details

"Painting no. 40" (2006) is an incredibly rare and highly important large scale, painting by acclaimed Chinese Contemporary artist Ma Liuming, arguably one of the most important, radical artists of the legendary generation of Chinese Contemporary artists born in the 1960's. This painting is one of Ma's most significant works to date, due to its monumental scale, but most importantly the rare use of ethereal soft blues that Ma employed in the years 2005-06. In turn, the painterly manner here is very rare for Ma, with a light blue sky and pink-tinged clouds filling the large canvas, beautifully balancing the attenuated, yet definite portrait at center that is also painted in a rare blue-based palette. This work measures 78.75 x 59 inches (200 x 150 cm) and is in perfect condition.

This work belongs to Ma's famous, ongoing Series of large-scale, conceptual oil paintings that each consists of a single, vertically distorted figures at center, an image that is literally and metaphorically being pulled between the China of today and that of yesteryear, between life and death, beginning and end.
