Lot Details

"Untitled (Connecticut Hills)" is a unique work on paper in mint condition, measuring 9.1 x 11.8 inches (23.1 x 30 cm), and is stylistic of the abstract works by leading German, American painter, Lyonel Feininger (1971-1956). This work has been authenticated by Achim Moeller of the Lyonel Feininger Projects LLC.

Although he is best known for his Abstract Expressionist paintings, he began as a cartoonist and illustrator. Feininger's works have appeared in French, German, and American magazines, and he had two comic strips in the Chicago Tribune, The Kin-der-Kids, and Wee Willie Winkie's World. His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. The artist studied painting at the Königliche Akademie in Berlin under Ernst Hancke, and later at the Académie Colarossi in Paris.

In 1913, Feininger was asked to exhibit with the Avant-Garde Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) group. He was also invited to be a teacher at the Bauhaus school by Walter Gropius at its inception and worked there until Hitler shut it down in 1933. In 1936, during the rise of the Nazi regime, Feininger returned to the U.S., while the Nazis included his work in their "Degenerate Art" show in Munich the following year. Feininger remained in New York City, continuing to paint and teach art until his death in in 1956. The artist's legacy was honored with a major retrospective exhibition at The Whitney Museum of American Art in 2011.
