Lot Details

"Welcome! World Famous Brands!" (2008) is a unique edition 1/1 fiberglass sculpture in the round by The Luo Brothers, the famed Chinese Contemporary artistic trio, and is a rare opportunity to acquire a one-of-a -kind sculpture by the artists, as most of their works are editioned multiples. This work measures 23.62 x 27.55 x 35.43 inches, (60 x 70 x 90 cm) and is in excellent condition.

"Welcome! World Famous Brands!" features the Luo Brothers iconic, smiling, chubby baby boy wearing a one-piece singlet emblazoned with Chinese symbols, standing upright and carrying an enormous fish in each hand, both chuuby babies and fish are symbols of good fortune and prosperity in China. The entire sculpture is painted a glossy, brilliant red, the 'color' of China. The Luo Brothers often rely on intense polychrome to underscore the kitsch nature of materialism and globalization in the new, modern China. In this work however, they express the same messages by directly referencing China's traditional porcelains and customs, depicted in a specific, uniform color that speaks to the collective culture of China, past, present and future.

The three Luo Brothers, Luo Wei Dong, Luo Wei Bing and Luo Wei Guo, stem from Guanigxi province in Southern China , and are internationally famed for their unique, over-the top works in a variety made from a variety of media, from large oil and lacquered wood panel paintings to fiberglass and bronze sculptures in the round. They are represented by top galleries world-wide, in Asia, Europe and the U.S. The works are in effect a conglomeration of what makes up their society today.
