"Welcome! Welcome! -Mao Express" (2003) is a major oil painting by the famous Chinese Contemporary art stars, The Luo Brothers. One of their rare and highly sought after "Vase Series" of photorealist oil paintings, here the confluence of the past and present is expressed in their typically visually overloaded and colorful manner, integrating the kitsch of 'new China' with the sombre realist sense of 'old China'. Western slogans and brands that have permeated Chinese culture are a major feature of the Luo Brothers works. Here, the dizzying repetition of the Marlboro slogan and the "Off-Road" Jeeps represent the West and the entire group is being led towards the future by a massive Big-Mac held aloft by three iconic Luo Brothers chubby babies, with one posed atop the McDonald's burger taking a photograph in glee. The icons of Western consumerism are integrated here with traditional Chinese imagery in a manner only the Luo Brothers could pull off, and at a grand scale. These large scale oil paintings by the Luo Brothers are very rare.

The three Luo Brothers, Luo Wei Dong, Luo Wei Bing and Luo Wei Guo, are internationally famous for these unique, over-the top works in a variety of media mostly lacquer paintings on wooden panels, oil paintings and cast statues out of lacquered fiberglass or bronze. The works are in effect a conglomeration of what makes up their society today. The land of the Luo Brothers is a saccharine vision that revels and enjoys the day-glo, glossy world of "new" China. There work is in top private and public collections world-wide.
