Lot Details

Chinese artist Lu Peng 吕鹏 (B. in 1967) lived through the Cultural Revolution, and here addresses the mutating changes of the Chinese society from Communist regimentation to chaotic consumer capitalism. This particular work, “Red Pipeline” (1998) highlights his surrealist settings evocative of a stage performance, replete with action and drama. Nude floating figures swim through space with limbs cropped from view and hidden or turned from the viewer. They are dispersed throughout the composition, unified only by the maze of pipe that frame the scene. Traditional calligraphic Chinese text are layered throughout, mirroring ancient documentation of the unspoken events of this painting, and mountains and sky are also integrated into the composition. This work is 15.75 x 26.95 inches (40 x 68.5cm) and comes in excellent condition.

Peng's work fuse classical methods with layered new concepts to comment on the present day society, and the inability to see the angles of the differing administrations ruling over China. Historic icons and chaotic intermixing figures painted against vibrant reds and blues heighten the drama, creating a perception of fantasies and memories. The work as a whole induces a metaphor for contemporary anarchy of the public amidst forced structure and ruling powers of the Chinese government.

Lu Peng was born in Beijing, and graduated from Beijing Teachers Training College in 1991, and also obtained a PHD in Chinese Painting at Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2007. Lu Peng has shows at the National Art Gallery of China in Beijing, China, Chinese Contemporary in London, UK, and exhibits extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Asia. The artist currently teaches at the Beijing College of Education, and lives and works in Beijing.
