Lot Details

Pushing the boundaries of abstraction, "Small Column XVI" from 1973 encapsulates the totemic, reflective sculptures for which Louise Nevelson is best known. This work is built of found objects of various sizes of wood, and depicted in matte black, the color of the artist's most valuable and powerful works. The present example was created using shadows that reflect the surrounding space, mirroring the artist's sentiments of identity amidst the male dominated art world during the era of Cubists and Abstract Expressionists. This sculpture measures 27.8 x 5.3 x 5 inches (70.6 x 13.5 12.7 cm) and is accompanied by both a Certificate of Authenticity and the original bill of sale.
