Framed (under Plexiglas): 62 x 25 in

This powerful, seminal work by contemporary artist Lorna Simpson is a gelatin silver print executed in 1988. Presenting a elusive view of a blindfolded woman, a plastic plaque below the image reads "they tried to whisper sweet nothings", alluding to ideas of power constructs and gender relations placed upon the individual. Captivating in its intimate perspective and haunting quality, this work by Simpson beautifully exemplifies the artist's style and her compelling approach to photography.

African American artist and photographer Lorna Simpson (B. 1960) often combines portrayals of black women and text to explore societal relations involving identity, ethnicity, gender, and power. Specifically, Simpson looks at enigmatic cultural interactions and the life experiences in contemporary multi-racial America. She employs a wide range of mediums including installations, videos, and silkscreened renditions of her photographs on felt panels. The artist has received numerous awards over the course of her career including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1985), the Whitney Museum of American Art Award (2001), and the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award (2010), among others.
