Lot Details

"Big Flagship" is a stunning silkscreen print in colors, loose as issued, and is in excellent condition. From an edition of 60 the print measures 35.40 x 30.10 inches (90 x 76.50 cm). "Big Flagship (Red/Little Navy)" (2007) is a major silkscreen print by Chinese Contemporary art Liu Ye. The stillness and tranquility of the works on paper and oil paintings by the artist are in marked contrast with the headlong rush for progress in modern day China and much of the art being created by his contemporaries. Liu Ye has appropriated the appearance of Pop Art as well as traditional Western painting styles and themes to create surreal works that tend to figure at least one figure in surreal narratives such as this one with a sailor pulling back the red velvet curtains--a reference to China--to reveal a Western Luxury Liner.

Liu Ye is internationally collected for his paintings and works on paper and screen prints. He graduated from the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts from the Mural Painting Department. He then earned a Masters of Fine Arts from Hochschule der Kunst in Berlin Germany. In 1998 he was an Artist in Residence, at Rijksacademie, Amsterdam. He is presented by top galleries in East and West, including the prestigious gallery Sperone Westwater, NY where his most recent solo show was held in 2009. Notable Solo Museum Exhibitions include "Liu Ye" , Kunstmuseum Bern, Switzerland in 2007. Notable Group Museum exhibitions include "CHINAMANIA," ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj, Denmark; “Metropolis Now! A Selection of Chinese Contemporary Art,” Meridian International Center, White-Meyer House (Cafritz Galleries), Washington DC; "Facing China – The Fu Ruide Collection,” Akureyri Municipal Art Museum, Akureyri, Iceland and “7 Shanghai Biennale,” Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai, China all held 2009 to present. Importantly, his first two commercial gallery solo exhibitions in 1993 and 1995 were both held at Gallery Taube, Berlin.
