Lot Details

"Face" (2009), is one of the largest and stunning of the oil paintings of super-cropped and colorful portraits of beautiful Chinese women, by internationally acclaimed Chinese Contemporary artists Liu XueKai (China B. 1964). The artist paints what would otherwise be a simple pretty picture in a unique manner, applying many dots of brilliant-hued paint by hand onto the canvas , in a manner that references pointillism, the paintings of Chuck Close, and the blurred images of friends and strangers from Internet videos that are an inherent element of modern society. Liu's painting style heightens the emotional and visual tension of the work, as the viewer strives to assimilate the fragmented portrait into a unified image. This painting is unframed measures 59 x 59 inches, and is in excellent condition.

Liu XueKai was born in Liaoning, China, and graduated from Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, China in 1984, as well as Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1993. He has exhibited in competitive exhibitions including "The 3rd International Visual Culture Special Group 2006 exhibition at the Today Art Museum, as well as the "80th Anniversary of the Founding of the PLA Art Exhibition at the China National Museum of Arts, along with other solo and group shows throughout China.
