Lot Details

"Trail" (2006) is a stunning two-part porcelain work of a pair of feet cast to mid-calf, almost resembling boots, that are ornately decorated with traditional Chinese ornament base in a bright purple and gold leaf pattern, with toe nails brightly painted and the top of each bare foot bearing a lush flower in bloom. This is a rare and exciting example of the subversive conceptual sculptures by Chinese Contemporary artist Liu Liguo (China, B. 1964) that have made him internationally sought-after and critically acclaimed.
Note: dimensions listed are for each of the two hand-painted porcelain sculptures that comprise 'Trail'. This is a unique sculpture, not an editioned work.

Liu Liguo is most famous for his unique interpretations of revered Ming and Tang Dynasty porcelains such as "Trail". Liu Liguo's oeuvre is an example of the Chinese style referred to as “Gaudy Art”, a school of thought whose subscribers often make use of pastiche in their illustration of the vulgarity of contemporary society. The substance of Liu Liguo’s works are a reflection on consumer society. Whether its a sculpture or one of his beautiful avant-garde paintings, everything is materially opulent, dripping with sensuality, abundance and creativity. The artist was born in China in 1964. The artist graduated in 1991 with Fine Arts Department of Beijing's National Theatre Institute. Represented by the world's top galleries, he is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the elite Yang Gallery, Singapore and Beijing.
