Lot Details

"Beauty-Lip Language No. 2" (2009), measures 70.86 x 59 inches (180 x 150 cm), and is one of the most accomplished paintings to ever come to auction by famed Chinese Contemporary female artist, Liu Hong. Liu is most highly sought-after artist for her: "Lip Language" series of large-scale realist oil portrait paintings of young, beautiful and very modern Chinese women in overtly sexual, confident and celebratory poses. Painted in the grey-scale of a black and white vintage photograph, this beautiful woman strikes a pose for toward the viewer, showing off her beautiful face, long neck, full lips and manicured nails, as she is about to take a sip of soda from the straw at her open mouth. She strikes a modern pose as if she is a fashion model in an advertisement in a magazine, underscored by the coca-cola can she holds up towards the viewer in her hand, channeling Marilyn Monroe. Her dark lips, cropped, modern, tangerine-colored hair and the color of the Coca-Cola can glow in dynamic contrast the rest of the painting. Liu Hong's incredible mastery of oil painting is at its best here as well, notably her deft and expressive brush stroke.

Liu Hong's portraits of the 'modern' young women of China covey the new Chinese feminine ideology not in overtly sexual images, but in the non-verbal cues that her portraits exude in their facial features and gestures. As the artist states about her inspiration behind this Series: "This is an era that belongs to beautiful women. Their attractive bodies can be seen everywhere, we are living in a world full of all sorts of beauty campaigns which show desire, beauty, sexiness, pleasure and fashion. A seemingly wish that was seen as shameful a few years ago, has become the fad of today’s life.'' --- Liu Hong

Liu Hong was born in Shan’Xi’s Feng Xiang, in 1956. In 1982, she received her Fine Arts Degree from Si Chun Art College with a major in Canvas Painting from the Painting Department. In 1986 she received her Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Canvas Paintings also from Si Chun Art College. The artist is now a professor of painting and Dean at the Cheng du Fine Arts Academy.
