Lot Details

Liu Fei. (China, B. 1983)."Rocker" (2011). Oil on canvas. This work is unframed and in excellent condition.

"Rocker" is a dynamic oil painting by emerging Chinese artist Liu Fei, known for her photorealist series of works that each make social commentaries on the East vs. West, tradition vs. 'The New Age'. "Rocker" depicts an acoustic wooden guitar that is being played by a miniature metallic robot of the future, whose metallic elements mirror that of the guitar. Here, the "All American" instrument that symbolizes Western rock music, as well as tradition, here is painted at a foreshortened perspective that adds dynamism and depth to the composition. A signature of Liu's paintings are her imaginary, futuristic metallic creatures that represent "The New" and always appear more harmless and curious in feeling than sinister or dangerous. The interface here of guitar and robot is a charming metaphor for the old-fashioned and traditional versus the modern and future. "Rocker" is clearly ironic in title and theme, as there are some things, such as music, that are best left to the traditional, regardless of culture.

Liu Fei (B. 1983) is one of the most celebrated young artists of her 80's generation from China. Her paintings sell out at both gallery and international art fairs in Asian, and she is currently hitting the art-scene in The West, especially Europe, U.K. and now the U.S. She graduated from the most elite art school in China, with a Master's Degree from the Oil Department of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, Chongqing, China.
