Lot Details

"Pointing Girl" (2008) is one of the most visually arresting of the large-scale realist portrait paintings by famed Chinese painter Liu Fei (China, B. 1969) and belongs to his most recent and critically acclaimed series of surreal, single or group portraits of young Chinese women. The title clearly references the deft gesture of the young woman at center, who stands out of context against a monochromatic background, and makes an unforgettable impression, as she points directly outwards with one finger, smiling ear to ear as she does so, with her mix of beauty and exaggerated facial expression visually arresting. It is as if she is too happy, and as such makes her both alluring and disconcerting. Her outfit intentionally references the uniforms that Chinese female students in the 1920s wore, namely a crisp, white blouse with a black skirt, images of these girls have been reproduced in many Chinese books, movies and photographs of the period, that tend to represent an era of innocence.

In Liu Fei’ s paintings however, innocence is lost, as is the girl’s hair, which is completely shaved off, exposing her bald head, imbuing this portrait with the feel of the urban, and of rebellion. The cherry lips of the 1920's are no longer innocent either, here they are sensual and fearless as they smile and laugh unabashedly. Her gesture is clearly posed, as Liu Fei takes inspiration from trendy magazines, commercial movies and TV programmes for the position and disposition of his models.

Liu Fei was born 1964 in Nan jing City, Jinagsu province, China and recevied his formal training from Nan Jing Fine Arts Academy with a painting degree in 1989. His paintings are setting records this year at Auction and on the primary market, and us represented by the elite Yang Galleries and Opera Galleries, in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
