Lot Details

"Yesterday Once More" (2012) is a sublime example of the large-scale figurative oil on canvas paintings that have made Chinese Contemporary female artist Liu Chenyang a rising star in her native China and throughout Asia, the U.S. and Europe. Here, Liu creates a dream-like narrative that centers around a young women who stands in an outdoor setting with eyes closed with a tranquil expression, as if recalling a dream or a memory. Liu paints with broad brush-strokes of bright, flat colors, employing a colorful yet muted palette that underscores the feeling of late afternoon and of days gone by. The young girl is dressed in a tank top and shorts, a contemporary outfit, yet the work possess an inherent feeling of vintage and nostalgia for the past, underscored in this case by the title of the work. The painting measures 51.20 x 47.25 inches and in excellent condition.

Liu Chenyang (China, B. 1984) is a leader of her 1980's generation of Chinese painters. Her break from the popular trend in Chinese Contemporary Realism is evident in her major paintings such as "Yesterday Once More", as well as her aversion to the neon and day-glow colors, that are often the foundation of the paintings of her contemporaries. The Western influence on her painting manner is evident, and there is a hint of Folk and/or Outsider Art in the way in which she depicts her subjects. Even at Liu's young age, she has already exhibited in Museums and prestigious Gallery exhibitions world-wide, including a 2009 solo show at Three Ravens Gallery, Brooklyn, New York,; "20x20" Black and White Exhibition, Toronto, Canada in 2008; the Guangxi Museum, China; "Existence·Harmony·Good", The Shanghai World Expo China Art Exhibition, and "The 1st Annual Beijing Art Gathering", Jinbaohui Art Center, Beijing, China amongst many others. The artist lives and works in Beijing, China.
