Lot Details

"Portait of the Daughter of the Artist (Extreme Illusion Series)" (2010) is a tour-de-force, monumental oil painting depicting a close-up, visually manipulated portrait of a the artist's young teenage daughter, by renowned Chinese Contemporary artist Liu Baomin. This is the only portrait of Liu's daughter that he has ever painted, is unframed and in excellent condition. Painted in the iconic fractured, hyper-real manner that has brought Liu international acclaim, this visually arresting portrait is painted in a manner that makes the viewer feel that we are viewing this portrait of his daughter through a waterfall, a sheet of rain or a faceted lens, with the complexity of shape, light, color, negative space and theme all working together to push visual and conceptual boundaries, where extreme reality meets extreme artifice. Liu's unique manner of manipulating the viewer’s perceptions of reality in this unique painting style takes painstaking amounts of time, with each work created over several months, thus producing only 3 to 4 paintings a year.

This world of Liu Baomin (China, B. 1968) is one where reality and fantasy co-exist, most notably in his "Extreme Illusion" Series of hyperrealist figurative oil paintings that launched the artist's career onto the international art scene, with paintings from the Series setting impressive international auction records and selling out on the primary market. Liu Baomin’s paintings have been the subject of numerous Museum exhibitions in Asia and Europe including from 2012-2007 including Zhuzao Art Museum (China), Castle Art Museum (Tours, France), and Normal Art Museum (China). The artist lives and works in Beijing, China.
