"Vanitas Bust" (2009) is a sculpture and air compressor installation work in the round by exciting emerging Korean artist, Lee Byung Ho. This work appears to be a plaster or white marble bust of a young, beautiful woman, but it is anything but. The milky and smooth sculptural portrait bust is made of silicone, and with the use of an air compressor, the bust inflates and deflates transforming this young woman to the peak of her physical beauty as the air blows in and into an aged, wrinkled elderly old woman as the air blows out (please see images for reference). This work is edition 3 of 3, measures 20.87 x 11.02 x 9.84 inches (53 x 28 x 25 cm) and is in excellent condition. This transformation explores the global obsession with physical beauty, which is ultimately fleeting and unattainable. This work was exhibited at Mori Museum, Tokyo, Japan, and is acquired by the present private collector from Gallery Zandari, Korea, whom formally represent the artist and is accompanied by a formal certificate of authenticity.
