Lot Details

Working in a range of approaches including abstract expressionism, lyrical abstraction, and color field painting, Des Moines, Iowa-born artist Larry Zox (1937-2006) is known for his prints and paintings which explored a variety of styles, vibrant colors, geometric forms, and elements of minimalism. Having studied under figurative artist George Grosz, Zox would later be recognized for his diversity as an artist. His innovative works of abstraction were dynamic compositions, varying from highly controlled straight edges, to fluid lines with more painterly surfaces. Zox has won numerous awards over the course of his career including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1967), a National Council for the Arts Award (1969), and the Adolf Gottlieb Foundation Grant (1985). The artist has held numerous shows at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY), the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY), the Museum of Fine Art (Boston, MA), and the Guggenheim Museum (New York, NY), among others.
