Lot Details

‘Pink in 1980’s Graffiti World’ is a fantastic triptych by notorious graffiti artist Lady Pink executed in acrylic and spray paint on canvas in 2010. With her iconic Wild Style lettering and bright, bold use of colors, Lady Pink recreates the beloved brick walls of the city she once used as her own personal canvas. Complete with a smattering of unique tags and throw-ups, people hanging out of fire escape windows, various aerosol cans, and a transit train rolling by completely covered in graffiti, this piece speaks to everything regarding her NYC roots and exemplifies her exceptional progression as an artist.

Born in Ecuador but raised in New York City, artist Lady Pink gained notoriety from 1979 onwards, when she was one of the only female artists competing alongside the boys of graffiti subculture, specifically on NYC’s subway lines. Known for her large-scale murals with explosive imagery and a kaleidoscopic range of color, Lady Pink’s work is the result of an incredibly intrepid and creative mind. With her named derived from her love of Victorian romance novels and beginning her career at the young age of 15, Lady Pink was included in the landmark show at Fashion Moda “GAS: Grafitti Art Success” in 1980 and landed a starring role in Charlie Ahearn’s film ‘Wild Style’ in 1983. She has since gone on to exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY), Bronx Museum of Art (Bronx, NY), and the MOCA’s ‘Art in the Streets’ exhibition (Los Angeles, CA), among numerous others. Lady Pink is a huge advocate of community outreach, holding mural workshops for kids and getting artists to donate or create art in neglected areas.
