Lot Details

Exemplifying LA II’s characteristic use of bold, energetic lines and sharply contrasting colors, these two early acrylic and paint marker on canvas works were both executed by the artist in 1983. The bright neon colors contend with the stark black contours to create compositions writhing with movement. Each canvas measures 14 x 18 inches. The pink barking dog is signed and dated verso. The yellow jumping man is tagged and dated 83".

LA II (B. Angel Ortiz, 1967) is a graffiti artist known best for his collaborations with Keith Haring in the 1980’s, by whom he was discovered. His works have a dynamic energy to them, often basing his art off Haring’s iconic use of bold lines, but adding a broader range of colors. As close friends and collaborators, Ortiz is often referred to as Haring's silent partner. The two have exhibited throughout the world together, including Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, NY; Paint Building in Tokyo, Japan; Robert Fraser Gallery, London, United Kingdom; Salvatore Ala Gallery, Milan, Italy; Jeffrey Deitch, New York City; and Bentley Gallery, Scottsdale, AZ.
