From Kohei Yoshiyuki’s infamous ‘Park’ series, this gelatin silver print portrays an anonymous couple in the throes of passion, unknowingly caught by the artist’s infrared flashbulb. Infused with a sexual tension seen throughout his work, Yoshiyuki forces the viewer to assume the role of the voyeur that he as the artist has already assumed. Often moonlighting through Tokyo’s Yoyogi and Shinjuku parks, Yoshiyuki would photograph the intimate acts of these couples, breaching ideas of surveillance and spying in order to expose relationships of voyeurism between the subjects, the artist, and the viewer.

Known for his voyeuristic and sexually charged photography, contemporary Japanese artist Kohei Yoshiyuki (b. 1946, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan) is renowned for ‘The Park’ series he completed during the 1970s. The artist would photograph intimate couples in parks throughout Japan, capturing not only the lovers, but disturbingly a crowd of men who had gathered around to watch. Unseen by the couple due to his use of infrared flashbulbs, the spectators, artist, and in turn the viewer, assume the role of the voyeur, spying on the private acts with a perverse sense of anonymity. The artist has exhibited at numerous venues including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, CA), Tate Modern (London, UK), and Fotomuseum Winterthur (Zϋrich, Switzerland).
