Lot Details

"ARTIFICIAL LANDSCAPE- Cross Drawing" (2009) is a stunning acrylic and crystal painting by acclaimed Korean female artist Kim Jong-Sook, who has received international attention for her ARTIFICIAL LANDSCAPE, created in formal partnership with Swarovski. "ARTIFICIAL LANDSCAPE-Cross Drawing" is one of Kim's largest and most complex works from the Artificial Landscape Series to-date, measuring 55.12 x 55.12 inches (140 x 140cm.) In this close-up, cropped scene of high cliffs and deep valleys, Kim creates a her own version of a traditional Korean landscape painting. The artist archivally hand-applies thousands of faceted Swarovski crystal elements, transforming the conservative scene into a shimmering Modern-day landscape. Jong-sook is influenced by her desire to re-interpret traditional Korean landscape paintings, as well works by Contemporary Western artists who also use crystals and decorative materials in their works, including Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Mickalene Thomas and the poured diamond series of photographs by Vik Muniz.
