Lot Details

The photographs of In Sook Kim (b. 1969, Korea) address themes of isolation and loneliness and how people deal with these feelings. Kim’s iconic work, "Saturday Night," (2007) brings together many such scenes into one image: the curtains are wide open and the lights are on in 66 windows of a high-rise hotel, providing an unobstructed view of the events taking place in each room. This is edition 12 of 100, is framed and the image measures 21.70 x 32.40 inches (55.1 x 82.30 cm). In "Saturday Night" the viewer becomes a voyeur into the lives of these people, glimpsing their private lives and most intimate moments in their rooms. Her subjects are engaged in various activities--from watching television and using the computer to drinking, doing drugs and having sex--calling attention to the many ways in which humans attempt to fill a void and drown out the loneliness we all at times feel.

In Sook Kim was born in Pusan, South Korea and studied at the Duesseldorfer Akademie with Thomas Ruff. The artist has won such awards like the 2nd Prize Emprise Art Award in 2002 and 1st Prize Hilton Hotel Photo Award, and has exhibited in major galleries and museums throughout Europe and the US. The artist currently lives and works in Dusseldorf, Germany.
