Lot Details

With playful imagery and bold, vibrant colors, “Zoom” exemplifies Kenny Sharf’s signature style that has elevated the notion of the cartoon to high art. Depicting a vibrant, celestial scene, this work highlights his iconic blend of Graffiti, Pop Art, and cartoon motifs.

Kenny Scharf (b. 1958) is a contemporary American artist who specializes in paintings, sculptures, installations, and prints. He is known for his eclectic works which go beyond what’s considered high art to explore popular culture and engage others in creative processes. Hugely inspired by Andy Warhol and Pop Art, Scharf’s works often reflect imagery of American consumerism, science-fiction, cartoons, and graffiti art. By incorporating popular culture motifs in his works—many derived from popular 60's television shows like "The Flintstones" and “The Jetsons"— Scharf challenges the viewer to accept the lowbrow world of cartoon imagery. A close friend of Keith Haring, Scharf was a key figure in the East Village art scene of the 1980s, with his first gallery show at Fun Gallery (1981) and later at Tony Shafrazi (1984). His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including Gagosian Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York, NY; and Waddington Custot Galleries, London, England, among others.
