Keith Haring (1958-1990) was a key player in the Pop Art Movement who gained international recognition between 1980 and 1989. Using simple and rhythmic lines, Haring created work that carried significant social messages. In April 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop, a retail store in Soho selling T-shirts, toys, posters, buttons and magnets bearing his images. He created the "Pop Shop" series of prints for sale in his store as well. Haring considered the shop to be an extension of his work and painted the entire interior of the store in an abstract black on white mural, creating a striking and unique retail environment. The shop was intended to allow people greater access to his work, which was readily available and inexpensive. By expressing universal concepts of birth, death, love, sex and war, through primacy of line and directness of message, Haring was able to attract a wide audience and assure the accessibility and staying power of his imagery. Today, his work is one of the most treasured and universally recognized visual languages of the 20th century. The expressive joy in Haring's work is one of the reasons he continues to attract collectors worldwide, despite his short life.
