Lot Details

Kehinde Wiley paints portraits of young African American men in compositions that directly refer to Old Master paintings and other iconic works of Western art history. In doing so, he engages with the visual vocabulary of wealth, status, morality, and identity underlying those canonical works. Executed in 2007, "Phillip" is an intimate, three-quarter-view portrait that recalls the early Flemish and Florentine traditions. At the same time, the work's wild colors and patterning, as well as the subject's casual dress, root the work in the present moment. The artwork measures 26 x 22 inches (66 x 55.9 cm). It comes framed in the artist's original frame, with dimensions of 32 x 28 inches (81.3 x 71.1 cm).
