Lot Details

In 1997 Kara Walker was asked to design a Christmas edition for art patron and collector Peter Norton who has been giving editions to his friends for some years. This multiple, entitled "Freedom a Fable: A Curious Interpretation of the Wit of a Negress in Troubled Times features the dreams of a "soon-to-be-emancipated 19th Century Negress," has text and 4 double-page exquisitely detailed pop-up images. It is an important artist book based on Walker's images of antebellum South featured in her recent Whitney show. This work received a mention in the New York Times "...provides a smart twist on the artist's previous work.." Slightest wear on the bottom leather, but this book has never been fully opened and is in excellent condition. Accompanied with the Norton Christmas Card.

Contemporary American artist Kara Walker is known for her signature cut-paper silhouette installations and light projection puppet-show videos. Theatrically set and casually violent, Walker’s vignettes depict dark behaviors as they examine various sorts of power struggles within the format of a classical, black and white frieze. She explores American history and attitudes concerning identity, gender, race and sexuality with a definite aloofness; playing historical realism against scenes of romantic fantasy. With colored spotlights illuminating her silhouetted figures, Walker’s powerful installations work to implicate audiences as they bear witness to such things as cut-paper characters inflicting heinous acts of violence upon each other. A 1997 MacArthur Grant Recipient, Walker was also the 2002 United States representative for the São Paulo Art Biennial in Brazil.
