This limited edition artist book has 5 original silhouettes by Kara Walker that are letterpress printed in black with a rectangular field printed in transparent white behind the image. It is hand signed by Kara Walker, Toni Morrison, and Peter Koch, the designer, in the rear colophon. The book was designed and printed letterpress from photopolymer plates at Peter Koch, Printers. The poem "Five Poems" by Toni Morrison is set in Rialto Piccolo, a typeface designed by Giovanni de Faccio and Lui Karner, and is printed on Rives BFK paper. This edition is case-bound in Fabriano Ingres-covered boards printed with a Walker design and comes housed in a cloth-covered slipcase. Binding and housing are by Jace Graf at Cloverleaf Studio in Austin, Texas. The slipcase, boards, the plates, and interior pages are in excellent condition.

Contemporary American artist Kara Walker is known for her signature cut-paper silhouette installations and light projection puppet-show videos. Theatrically set and casually violent, Walker’s vignettes depict dark behaviors within the format of a classical, black and white frieze to examine and comment on various power struggles. She explores American history and attitudes concerning identity, gender, race and sexuality with a definite aloofness, playing historical realism against scenes of romantic fantasy. With colored spotlights illuminating her silhouetted figures, Walker’s powerful installations work to implicate audiences as they bear witness to scenes of cut-paper characters inflicting heinous acts of violence upon one another. A 1997 MacArthur Grant Recipient, Walker was also the 2002 United States representative for the São Paulo Art Biennial in Brazil.
