Lot Details

Executed in watercolor and gouache on paper, this exquisitely colored work by artist Joseph Dudley Downing presents his iconic investigation into abstraction. Infusing a dynamic range of form and color into an expressive composition, this work on paper executed circa 1960 captures the artist’s distinctive approach and lyrical style he has since become renowned for in his painting.

The work of internationally renowned painter Joseph (Joe) Dudley Downing (1925-2007) has been recognized for its brilliant use of color and lyrical sense of abstraction. His work maintains a distinctive combination of media and technique, which, despite his international travels, was rooted in the cave designs and natural landscape of his native Kentucky. He painted on animal bones, leather, terra cotta roof tiles, wood and other materials as well. Downing moved to Paris following his graduation from the Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, IL) in 1950and would remain there until his death in 2007. The artist had exhibited extensively throughout the world with shows in France, Sweden, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Germany, the United States, and numerous other countries.
