A fine late 1970s/early 1980s print of the iconic image by famed Czech photographer, Josef Koudelka. From his renowned Gypsy Series, completed in 1968, just two days before the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia. Koudelka is internationally recognized and the recipient of numerous major grants and awards and the subject of nine monographs and numerous one-person and group exhibitions. He frequently photographs visually compelling social and cultural rituals and it has been said that his best photographs evidence an ineffable “presence of the human spirit.”

A beautiful impression with deep, rich shadows, excellent open middle tones and crisp detail and resolution. Image area is near-pristine. Minor tear (stabilized) and two minor creases both in print margins—not uncommon with Koudelka's oversized prints and, according to experts, not affecting value. Koudelka's smaller (9"x12") prints of this image commonly sell for $20,000 and above at auction. An over-sized print, like the one offered here, sold at Christie's, New York in April of 2011 for $43,750.
