Lot Details

"Wee Chick" (1969) is an exciting oil on panel painting by famed American outsider artist Jon Serl (U.S., 1894-1993). This work measures 20.75" x 30" and is in excellent condition, in the original found frame, as framed by Serl. The frame is worn and scratched with traces of gold leaf,--in the same condition as when Serl first mounted it to the painting. The artist was represented by the Jamison Thomas Gallery in Portland, Oregon in the 1980's until the gallery closed in 1994. Mr. Jamison brought this painting back to Portland from Serl's studio in California for an exhibition held at his gallery in the early 1990's. "Wee Chick" was purchased by a private U.S. collector, Oregon, and has been held in this collection since.

Jon Serl was a self-taught American painter who began painting steadily in the the late 1960's and into the 1970's, painting almost daily with oil on found boards, masonite, canvas and even over discarded paintings. He is widely recognized for his unique figurative style and works that possess a fable-like quality. His work is in permanent collections of many museums including The American Folk Art Museum and The Smithsonian American Art Museum.
