Lot Details

In this ‘Untitled’ work on paper, John Millei utilizes the contrasts between the thick, brown stock paper and the white oil paint to showcase the possibilities that the paint medium affords. Here, Millei achieves a sense of space and depth by playing up the interaction between the white paint and the brown surface. Varying only the thickness of the paint, Millei creates a compelling abstract composition that emphasizes the physical nature of the material.

Drawing on the styles and themes of the past, Los Angeles based artist John Millei (b.1958) engages art history with a new, more technical approach to examine the relationship between the painting action, the paint material, and the composition. Throughout his career, Millei has used abstraction as a means of referencing history. However, with his more recent work, Millei has ventured into figurative representations that maintain facets of abstraction but ultimately suggest portraiture. Millei has been exhibited throughout the world and has held recent solo shows at ACE Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2010); Washington Adams Project, Los Angeles, CA (2009); Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venice, Italy (2008); ACE Gallery, New York, NY (2000); and Galerie Ghislaine Hhussenot, Paris, France (1999).
