American sculptor John Chamberlain (1927-2011) is well known for his use of festive color and found materials. His work is rooted in the tension of the Abstract Expressionists, and exhibits the flow and noisiness of Fluxus. Chamberlain’s works have been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the São Paulo Art Biennial, the Venice Biennale, and the Whitney Biennial. He had his first retrospective in 1971 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and another retrospective was held by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1986. Most recently, Chamberlain's legacy was honored with an impressive and revered retrospective at the Guggenheim in New York, from February through May of 2012.
