Lot Details

Known for his unconventional art, John Baldessari compiles fragmented photographs to create a composition that questions the relationship between the images in this work entitled 'Object (with Flaw).' Baldessari applies a painterly element to remind the viewer that the hand of the artist is not only in the ordering of the images, but to hybridize the photographic process. The incompleteness of the work lends a sense of mystery and allows the viewer to construct his own story.

Since 1973, John Baldessari (b. 1931) has used photography as a way to create conceptual compositions that explore relationships between images and language, often rendering them with an absurdist sense of humor. He appropriates his imagery from a variety of sources, including advertising and film, transforming them into works that are ironic investigations into perception, meaning and interpretation. From his photo-text canvases and obscuring of faces, to his composite photo collages and installations, Baldessari has significantly contributed to the definition and evolution of Post-Modern art. The artist has won various awards over the course of his career including the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award from the 53rd International Art Exhibition Venice Biennale in 2009 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Americans for the Arts in 2005, among numerous others.
