Lot Details

One of John Aquilino's largest and most visually arresting realist oil paintings to date, "Crossing Light" (2009) is a masterpiece from the artist's oeuvre. Aquilino celebrates the urban American landscape through his iconic use of large areas of flat, bright colors, the play of light and shadow, patterns and heightened realism. The dramatically vertical format of this work underscores the sheer height of the skyscraper depicted at center, and underscores the majesty that most urban architecture inherently possesses. Ironically, this work takes its name from the single crossing light depicted, one of smallest features in this large-scale work. This reference invites the viewer to savour the grandeur of the painting, as well as discover its most subtle and quiet details. Aquilino's love of urban environments is admittedly connected to his native New York City, where he was born, raised and also went to University. This painting is framed in a neat white wooden frame and is in excellent condition.

Aquilino attended New York University (focus: 3D modeling and animation), The Art Students League (BFA painting and drawing), and The School of Visual Arts (MFA in painting and drawing), all in New York, NY. The artist has had many important corporate and public art commissions in the region, including The DC Council on the Arts and Humanities, Washington, DC,;The National Association of Home Builders, Washington, DC; Rowe Chiropractic Offices, New York, NY; Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP, Washington, DC. His works and biography were just features in "New American Paintings", #88, June/July 2010. The artist lives and works in the Washington, D.C. area, U.S.
