This bronze sculpture by Joel Shapiro is a whimsical Minimalist refashioning of the 1991 National Book Award for Fiction, awarded to writer Norman Rush for his novel "Mating." It comes from an edition of 4, and the artist has incised his signature and the date into the work.

Joel Shapiro (b. 1941) is a contemporary American sculptor whose aesthetic lies between figuration and abstraction. Born in New York, Shapiro originally intended to be a physician and studied science as an undergraduate at New York University. After serving in the Peace Corps in India for two years, he decided to pursue a career as an artist; upon his return, he took further classes at New York University while working on his art. Shapiro referenced traces of human activity in his early sculptures, including small-scale works of furniture and homes. His more recent work in bronze, wood, and other materials depicts abstracted, large-scale geometric shapes suggestive of human forms. Shapiro’s work has often been associated with Post-Minimalist art. Shapiro has received several awards for his work, including the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture, a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He has had solo exhibitions at Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, England (1980); the Whitney Museum (1982); the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands (1985); and the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY (2001), among others. He has also received commissions to create public sculptures from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, DC; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. He lives and works in New York.
